About Kas

As a team, we had to come up with a solution that allows users to navigate biases in industries and societal systems for IBM’s 2025 Service Design Challenge. Our app, Kas, tackles the biases women face in gynaecology—as women’s health is underresearched, misdiagnoses and dismissals are a problem that often follows. Kas acts as a management tool that allows users to document symptoms and pains they experience, tracking them to understand patterns and build a history that better supports their health concerns when advocating for themselves in clinical settings. This app supports patients in appointments with their doctors, helping them feel prepared for productive conversations that focus on finding solutions.

My Researcher Role

I played a large role when it came to the research behind the development of Kas, gathering background information to understand our problem, conducting surveys and interviews for first-hand experiences with Canada’s healthcare system, as well as testing our prototype with potential users. My initial background research and reaching out through surveys led us to understand where exactly the healthcare system falls short when it comes to women’s health. Doing so allowed us to carve a meaningful solution that bridges those gaps with a variety of perspectives in mind. Through usability testing, I found weaknesses in our app when it came to connecting female patients to their doctors. By simplifying medical jargon for better understanding and efficiently visualizing data into information users can comprehend, users were able to navigate Kas with ease.

Challenges and Succeses

The biggest challenge I faced in this project is working in an agile environment, where new information and findings continuously pushes us to make changes to improve the solution. With the 3 month time frame we were given, it was imperative that we don’t stray from the scope while achieving the problem we want to confront. However, with careful planning and extensive research, we quickly adapted to these obstacles. Despite the challenges, being a researcher while working on Kas helped me understand the steps it takes to create a strong foundation to build a solution off of. Reiteration proved to be an important course of action to designing a solution that integrates different stakeholders. Making Kas strengthened my skills as a designer, evolving my research and problem-solving skills through interdisciplinary thinking.
